Brooms, mattresses, sheets and birds
Exhibition
Performance

In 2023, Polina Stroganova co-curated Brooms, Mattresses, Sheets and Birds with Andrea Bustillos as a site-specific exhibition staged in an abandoned sports club in Mexico City.

Let's think about the poetic of dust; a mattress that has become an instrument; sounds trying to be images; birds listening to music and a dance in the middle of the storm. Let's imagine an intimate exhibition that focuses on the potential of the ephemeral and brings together five artists whose work is connected through the sensibility of the performative: the complexity of a simple action, the sculptural of movement, the evocation of the imaginary.

A temporary structure was built to host video and performance works by Emilio Gómez Ruíz, Arturo Hernández Alcázar, Annika Kahrs, Chantal Peñalosa, and Martin Soto Climent, transforming the disused space into a platform for ephemeral artistic encounters.Stroganova shaped the curatorial framework around themes of embodiment, fragility, and everyday poetics, emphasizing the performative potential of recontextualized materials and gestures. Activated through a program of live performances and public events, the exhibition foregrounded a curatorial approach rooted in process, temporality, and dialogue—extending Stroganova’s ongoing interest in reimagining exhibition formats beyond institutional settings.
